School Supplies Laced with Toxic Chemicals: Make Sure Your School Avoids These Products
School Supplies Laced with Toxic Chemicals: Make Sure Your School Avoids These Products: Depending on where you live, schools are either back in session or the first day is fast approaching. A new study by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, or USPIRG, found harmful chemicals in everyday school supplies that could be in your child’s classroom or backpack.
Yikes!! The girl has been in kindergarten for eight whole weeks! Eight!
Luckily, I’ve survived emotional unscathed. I thought I was going to be a huge sappy, sobbing mess... but, she’s done so well, and loves school so much, I’ve only had time to beam with pride! I haven’t broken down once, I haven’t cried, I haven’t circled the school peering in through the windows!
Now, that’s not to say that I haven’t already put in about 6 of my 20 required parent volunteer hours... or, insinuated my girl (and her co-kindergartners) deserve a more age appropriate play ground, and offered to build/buy one, or secretly cleaned their classroom bathroom while in there with my littlest in the am’s... (My name is Naomi, and I have a problem...)
Buuuuut, I have a feeling if I ask to start rifling through the much needed kindergarten coven of folders, markers, erasers, and crayons to throw away any with toxic chemicals.... they may think I'm crazy....
I’ve got to find a way to swap out any possible Playskool crayons, or Dollar Store folders.
The girl has a safe (albeit expensive) water bottle, with cute fat little unicorns. And, when school supply shopping this momma went for Crayola and Mead... because, I have deep deep name brand issues.... but, now I can use the motto mo money mo better products?!? Right? (Is that a motto?)
Seriously though...
Part of the unfortunate part of safer, cleaner living is, the people with the most need for limitations to toxic chemicals.... have no control over those choices!
Also, most of the time, the safer option, whether it’s food, self care items, make up, clothing... are ridiculously more expensive!!! Which means, even adults who want to make safer choices, may have difficulty if they don’t have the means!
We’ve got to find ways to make safe acceptable, and affordable to everyone. This isn’t just about crayons and folders.
So, if you happen to be buying extra supplies for your child's classroom, or donating supplies to school districts in need.... avoid the supplies listed in the link above.
xoxo Naomi
